The winter season is around the corner, and choosing the right ski boots is one of the most important gear decisions you’ll make. Whether you're looking for maximum control for freeride, lightness for ski touring, or a versatile hybrid boot — the right pair transforms your experience in the mountains.
In this guide, you'll learn how to choose the right ski boots and explore our top picks from SCARPA, selected for different styles and levels. All models are currently 50% off at Basecamp.
What to Look for When Choosing Ski Boots
1. Flex (Stiffness)
Measured in numbers — the higher the number (e.g., 120–130),the stiffer the boot. Softer flex = more comfort and forgiveness; stiffer flex = more control for aggressive skiing. Flex values vary by brand but offer a general reference point.
2. Volume (Last)
This refers to the width of the boot at the forefoot — usually between 98 and 104 mm. A narrow last = better precision for advanced skiers, while a wider last = more comfort for all-day skiing or wider feet.
3. Forward Lean and Tongue Mobility
A more pronounced forward lean supports an aggressive stance on descents. In touring boots, the tongue and cuff should allow free ankle movement for a more natural uphill stride.
4. Walk Mode
Essential for ski touring. Allows the cuff to move back and forth — the larger the range (e.g., 55°),the more comfortable the boot is when climbing.
5. Binding Compatibility
Not all boots fit all bindings. Some models are compatible with classic Alpine bindings, others with Pin/Tech systems. Some have hybrid soles like GripWalk. Always check compatibility with the bindings you own or plan to use.
